My First WordPress Plugin
I’m in a cheerful mood today. I wrote my very first “finished” WordPress plugin yesterday, and submitted it to the WordPress plugin directory. By this morning, they had approved it, and it’s up and running.
It’s called Stupid Simple Google Maps. I’d been having trouble adding really basic map functionality to a directory type website I’ve been working on for The Capital. I didn’t want to fill out a title, and lat/long coordinates, and save the map, and insert… you get the point. SSGM works by wrapping a shortcode around an address:
[simple-map]1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA[/simple-map]
This drops in a map with a pinpoint on, you guessed it, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA. There’s parameters if you need them, and I might build in ways to customize the default settings in a v2 of SSGM, but for now, these are just Stupid Simple.
Also, go download it, and say nice things about me. Here’s the link again, just in case.

New Website!
So this is the first redesign of my website since college. I’ve never really been great at blogging, but I’ll continue to put forth an effort.
Right now my site is not as refined as I was hoping it would be, but I wanted to to get it out there so that I could stop feeling ashamed whenever someone looked me up. It’s built on WordPress, because it’s wicked easy to develop for. Custom theme (obviously), but what I’m really proud of, is the custom plugin that I’m still working on.
It connects with various APIs across the web. Right now just github and twitter, but hopefully others down the road. It pulls in my activity from those sources, and posts them as their own content types. You can see them in the Me On the Web page. It pulls things in automatically, but I have to take them out of “Private” before they go live. Just in case I tweet something I don’t want showing up on my site. Or commit the nastiest block of code ever into github. Nobody wants to see that :/
